The Laoag Eco-Adventure Development (LEAD) Movement, a group geared towards adventure and eco-tourism, introduced the sport in the country around August last year. Mark Manahan, a member of the group, said they were inspired by sandboarding in Dubai in the Middle East.

The group’s president Reny Tan and his architect friend Glenn Guerrero designed the board, patterned after a skateboard but without wheels.

Tan is hoping sandboarding becomes a tourist attraction for Ilocos, a province already known for its centuries-old churches and white sand beaches.

“My children were telling about sandboarding and I thought about our sand dunes here. So I searched about it on the Internet that’s how it all started,” Tan said.”

“The whole sports sprung almost fully formed from the days of slow boredom that Glenn and Reny, both 4×4 racing enthusiasts, shared early last year, “malamang dahil sobrang tumaas ang presyo ng gasolina at hindi na kami makapag-4×4 kaya nag-isip kami ng ibang pagkakaabalahan,” Reny shrugs. Copying the equipment that sandboarders in Dubai used, Reny and Glenn devoted hefty man-hours to their backyard RND operation by August 2009, after building and breaking a lot of prototypes, they finally developed a board that could handle the dunes. “It’s made out of laminated plywood with a formica bottom,” says Glenn, an architect by profession. “I think we have three layers d’yan.” From their word spread like wildfire. People from as far as Hong Kong, Australia and China have since flown over to Laoag to try it. It’s something that makes Tina Tan just ecstatic: “The kids really love it! I can’t believe this is becoming a sport and getting the attention it’s had.”

“Another group of enthusiasts, the Laoag Eco-Adventure (LEAD) Movement, has made an iconic Ilocos Norte site its playground. Headed by couple Reny and Tina Tan, LEAD, who were looking for a non-expensive, eco-friendly pastime, have introduced sandboarding—where else—at the Paoay sand dunes.

“We’re advocating ‘responsible adventure,’” says Tina. “We should always mind the environment.”
